An Israeli-American woman allegedly jailed over drug smuggling in Russia has been pardoned ahead of a visit by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Moscow.
Russian President Vladimir Putin pardoned Naama Issachar, according to a statement released by the Kremlin on Wednesday.
The presidential decree was supposedly issued on "humanitarian principles," read the statement.
The measure was taken as Netanyahu was scheduled to fly directly to Russia after cinching the so-called “deal of the century” in the US.
"I thank my friend, President Putin, on his granting of a pardon to Naama Issachar," said the Israeli premier. "I expect we will meet tomorrow and we will discuss the deal of the century and the recent regional developments."
Issachar had been sentenced her to 7.5 years in a standard regime penal colony, following a ruling by the Khimki City Court in the Moscow Region.
She was detained at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport in April 2019, before boarding a connecting flight to Tel Aviv.
"Guided by the principles of humanity, I decree to pardon Naama Issachar, born in 1993, sentenced on October 11, 2019 by the Khimki City Court of the Moscow Region, releasing her from serving the rest of her sentence," read the Kremlin statement.
During a visit to Jerusalem al-Quds, Putin had reportedly assured her mother that "everything will be alright."
"I am aware of the position of Prime Minister [Netanyahu] who asks to make an appropriate decision. All that will certainly be taken into account when the final decision is made," Putin said at the time.
Netanyahu’s visit to Russia follows an international outcry over US President Donald Trump’s so-called “deal of the century” censured, in part, by Palestinian leaders.
